Researchers Use 3D Printing To Make Artificial Blood To Treat Cardiovascular Diseases

Recently, in the recently published paper "Artificial Blood Vessels Made by 3D Printing for Drug Applications", researchers discussed not only cardiovascular diseases as the leading cause of mortality in the elderly, but also new methods of making artificial blood by 3D printing. The future can improve the quality of life of patients, reduce cardiac arrest and infectious blood vessels.

Historically, artificial blood vessels (ABV) have faced many challenges, and scientific researchers are actively looking for other vascular support methods. In this study, researchers attempted to print a new kind of artificial blood vessel using polymer materials and bioceramics nanoparticles through 3D printing. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was composed of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles.

This is not a new experiment for scientists. Documents date back to 1912, when researchers began to use a combination of metal and glass tubes to make artificial arteries for dogs requiring heart surgery. Other studies have shown that researchers can create polymer matrix for arterial replacement. Drug therapy has been the main treatment for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), as well as surgical treatment.

As researchers began the process of making artificial veins, many considerations were given to appropriate biocompatible materials. There are three main steps to create:

1.The nanocrystalline HA powder was prepared from bovine bone, grinded for 10 hours, then heated to 800-850 C for 3 hours to purify the material.

2.TPU polymer is ground into smaller particles and then mixed with HA powder concentration. 3. Filament 3D printing is used to make artificial veins. The diameter of each artificial vein is 6mm.

Researchers point out that although TPU has some disadvantages such as wear resistance and "lack of transparency" in different solvents, it has the following advantages:

High strength

Non adhesion

High polarity

In a high-energy ball mill, TPU biopolymer is mixed with HA power of various concentrations (0, 2.5, 5 and 7.5 wt%) to insert the mixed composite powder into the extruder at a specific heating rate. Then, the homogenized TPU-HA filament is used to extract the results and insert them into the 3D printer.

(a) Design of dual-branch ABV, b) Design of solid engineering software and containers in ABV model in simplified 3D software, c) Top and D of SEM image; Transverse view of SEM image constructed by 3D printer (aperture: 50-100 micron)

After evaluating the mechanical and biological properties, the researchers found that the biodegradability of polymers changed and affected the mechanical properties. ABV can play a role "many times" in human body and survive in hypertension and pulmonary vein movement.

New biotechnologies ABV are compact, flexible and anticoagulant. They also have nanotechnology-based heart palpitation adaptation systems and loading of specific micro molecules in adhesives. Analytical materials at atomic and molecular levels and nanotechnology allow these thorns to enter the core (stem cells). When stem cells are absorbed, they cover the entire inner surface of the stem and become endothelial cells. Researchers say these polymer materials can be transplanted into human ABV to help provide nutrition for body tissues.

The team's real goal was to prevent cardiac arrest and amputation by using the link between coronary artery and lower limb artery. They also suspected that ABV could provide biocompatibility and nontoxicity in infections, as well as mechanical and blood compatibility similar to polyurethane. They also add that when using variable "triangular motion" in FDM 3D printing, it is possible to form more uniform containers than other high porosity movements, which can better control the porosity of ABV walls.

Overall, although the use of artificial veins is challenging, researchers say that "selective blood vessels for vascular replacement" must create alternatives - especially those that can accommodate patients with smaller veins.

According to the results, the combination of analytical model and experimental evaluation can be used to simulate the micromechanical behavior of arteries and vessels. It is noteworthy that the porosity of blood vessels significantly affects the shear stress and modulus of elasticity of veins. In this regard, the results show that hemorheological behavior has a significant effect on shear stress changes. The results of this study demonstrate the effects of obstruction rate, pore location and enhancement degree in veins on the elastic modulus and porosity of the tube. In addition, the biological behavior of the samples showed that adding bioceramics could improve the elastic modulus response.

The incidence of cardiovascular diseases is the highest in the world. There are about 156 million people in the world every year, which is the biggest killer of human diseases. Researchers around the world are constantly committed to innovation, focusing on 3D bioprint vascular research and development to improve the lives of patients.
